Having trouble identifying common garden pests? Here are some tips!

  1. Aphids are usually green with a narrow head and wide abdomen and needle-like mouthpieces to siphon plant sap. Signs of aphids include white flakes on plants, honeydew on the foliage and black sooty mold.
  2. Whiteflies are white, triangular shaped flying insects that are found in clusters on the underside of leaves. They cause yellowing leaves, wilted stems and stunted growth. They produce honeydew on plants by sucking plant juices out of plants, which leads to fungal diseases. This can cause an inability for plants to be able to carry out photosynthesis.
  3. Scale bugs are common in large groups and are usually circular or oval in shape and are a tenth of an inch long. The effects on plants from scale bugs include wilting and withering of leaves, browning of leaf tips, and fungal infections.
  4. Mites are hard to see with the naked eye, but they can be easily recognized by the damage they cause to plants. Brown or yellow leaves, speckled foliage, tiny web-like structures and leaf drop suggest mite infestation.
  5. Mealybugs are small, flat, waxy insects with oval, segmented bodies that are white or pink with a greyish wax coating. Effects of mealybugs on plants include stunted growth, contorted plant shapes, black sooty mold, abnormal flower formations, weak growth and dropped fruit, vegetables and flowers.
