Summer means stinging insects. One of the most common in our area is the yellow jacket. Today we take a closer look at this flying pest.

Learn about yellow jackets:

  1. Yellow jackets are attracted to meat, fruit and sweet drinks
  2. Queen yellow jackets lay hundreds of eggs
  3. Yellow jackets have a smooth stinger, so they can sting more than once
  4. Yellow jacket nests are constructed from a paper-like material made from chewed wood fibers and saliva
  5. A mature colony consists of a queen, 2,000-4,000 female workers, brood and (in late summer) males & reproductive females
  6. Male drones come from non-fertilized eggs
  7. Male drones cannot sting
